Hydraulic Seal Sourcing: OEM Kit, Stock Seal or Custom Machined Seal?

The fastest seal order is the one that fits the hardware and the duty. A photograph or a stretched old seal is useful evidence, but neither is a complete specification.

Choose the sourcing route

• OEM kit: useful when the cylinder identity and revision are confirmed. Verify kit contents and whether hardware has been modified.
• Catalog seal: appropriate when profile, gland dimensions, tolerances and duty match the supplier’s design.
• Custom machined seal: consider for obsolete or nonstandard dimensions after a supplier reviews the gland and service conditions.

Make a specification pack

Include bore and rod diameters, groove diameter and width, seal location, pressure direction, clearances and available drawings. State units. Photograph the profile with a scale and mark the dynamic contact surface. Record exact fluid, temperature range, pressure peaks, stroke speed and contamination conditions.

Compare quotes on the same basis

Request the proposed profile and compound code, dimensional assumptions, quantity, lead time, traceability, inspection documents and installation instructions. Ask the supplier to identify deviations from the original specification. A low price for an unverified rubber ring is not comparable with an engineered seal assembly.

What custom machining does not fix

Changing a seal dimension cannot automatically correct an oversized groove, excessive extrusion gap, scored bore or bent rod. Confirm hardware repair first. Do not substitute a seal for a guide ring or change pressure direction to make a convenient catalog part fit.

Receive and verify before assembly

Match the delivered label, part number, compound and quantity to the agreed specification. Keep parts clean and packaged; follow shelf-life and storage guidance from the supplier. Resolve dimension or profile differences before installing, and retain the specification for the next repair.
