Old Hydraulic Cylinder With No Part Number? How to Match the Seals
A missing OEM seal kit does not automatically make an old cylinder unrepairable. Many cylinders can be resealed by identifying each sealing position and matching the actual hardware dimensions.
Why generic “same bore and rod” kits fail
Two cylinders can share the same nominal rod and bore but use different gland widths, piston designs, wipers, wear rings, static O-rings and seal profiles. A kit that looks close may still be wrong.
What to record during teardown
Create a simple seal map: rod seal, buffer seal if present, wiper, gland O-ring/back-up, piston seal, wear rings and any static seals. Label each item and photograph which way it faced before cleaning.
Measure the grooves, not only the rubber
A worn seal may be permanently deformed. Measure rod and bore diameters, groove diameters and widths, piston/gland dimensions and lead-in geometry. Compare those values with the candidate seal manufacturer’s housing data.
When loose seals are better than a kit
For obsolete, modified or private-label cylinders, matching individual seals can be more reliable than buying a kit based only on a machine model. It also lets you correct a previous wrong profile or material—provided the groove supports the replacement design.
When to stop and use a hydraulic shop
If the gland cannot be identified, the bore/rod is damaged, the piston arrangement is unusual, or the cylinder is safety-critical, send the complete assembly or detailed measurements to a competent hydraulic repair/seal specialist.
