Telescopic Cylinder Seal Installation: Stage-by-Stage Checklist
A telescopic cylinder contains several sealing and guiding assemblies. Mixing parts between stages can create leakage, binding or the wrong extension sequence even when the kit appears to fit.

Make the work safe and traceable
Lower or mechanically support the body and load using approved supports, isolate power and relieve stored pressure. Use rated lifting equipment for nested tubes. Do not rely on hydraulic pressure to hold a raised body. Photograph the assembly and label stages from largest to smallest before removing components.
Map the kit to each stage
Make a separate tray for each stage. Record tube diameter, gland arrangement, seal profile, wear rings, stop rings and retaining components. A part left over or a missing ring is a reason to stop and compare the drawing, not to improvise. Single-acting and double-acting designs can use different sealing arrangements.
Inspect tubes and guides before installation
Check running surfaces for scoring, corrosion and wear, and inspect guide clearances, threads and retaining features. Compare measured dimensions with the maker’s limits. A new packing set will not correct a bent tube or excessive side load.
Install without copying an unknown old assembly
Confirm pressure direction and each packing stack from the service diagram. Use approved lubricant and installation tools, protect seals from threads and sharp transitions, and keep dirt out of nested stages. Tighten or adjust retainers only to model-specific instructions. There is no universal gland torque or packing compression setting.
Commission and record the stage sequence
Follow the manual’s filling, air removal and cycling procedure in a controlled area. Compare actual extension and retraction order with the specified order for this model. If movement binds, changes order or leaks, stop and investigate alignment, packing adjustment, restrictions and trapped air before adding load. Never copy another model’s bleed method or cycle count.
Common reasons a reseal fails
- Parts mixed between similarly sized stages.
- A damaged tube passing through a new seal.
- Incorrect guide or retainer assembly.
- Side loading from worn mounting or machine guides.
- Commissioning without the model’s stage-sequence checks.
