Clean and inspect
Clean the groove, rod, piston and bore. Remove burrs, corrosion and old seal fragments before the new seal is exposed.
Good seal installation is less about force and more about preparation. A correct seal can fail immediately if it is dragged across a burr, twisted in the groove, installed backward, contaminated, or stretched beyond what the material can tolerate.

Clean the groove, rod, piston and bore. Remove burrs, corrosion and old seal fragments before the new seal is exposed.
Cover threads, ports and shoulders with a smooth sleeve or installation aid before moving a seal across them.
Identify the actual seal profile and pressure direction before fitting. Similar-looking profiles can face different ways.
For closed grooves, use the manufacturer-approved fold, stretch or installation tool. Avoid sharp creases and uncontrolled stretching.
Work the seal evenly into the groove. Confirm it is untwisted, fully seated and not rolled under itself.
Use chamfers/sleeves and controlled alignment. Stop if resistance suddenly becomes abnormal.
Never open a hydraulic cylinder that may still contain trapped pressure or support a suspended load. Follow the machine manufacturer’s isolation, lockout and support procedure before disassembly.
Keep the old seal stack in order as it comes apart. Photograph the orientation before removing each component. Compare every new seal, O-ring, back-up ring, wear ring and wiper with the old parts and the service drawing.
A new seal cannot compensate for a deeply scratched rod, damaged bore, worn guide ring, sharp groove edge or excessive clearance. Correct the hardware problem first or the new seal may fail again.
Clean all grooves and sealing surfaces. Remove chips and contamination. Threads, ports, keyways and sharp shoulders that the seal must cross should be covered with a smooth fitting sleeve or other suitable protection. Do not drag a sealing lip across exposed threads.
Light lubrication reduces assembly friction and helps prevent dry tearing. Clean hydraulic operating fluid is often suitable, but the exact seal and fluid combination still matters. Avoid unknown grease or solid additives unless the seal manufacturer permits them.
Static O-rings and back-up rings, rod seals, buffer seals, piston seals, wear rings and wipers each have different jobs. Single-acting lip seals normally face their open side toward pressure, but do not apply that rule blindly to symmetrical, double-acting or multi-piece profiles.
Some rod seals are folded into a controlled kidney shape for closed grooves. Piston seals may need controlled expansion over a mandrel. PTFE rings often require expansion and then sizing or calibration. Use smooth tools designed for seal assembly rather than screwdrivers with sharp edges.
Lead-in chamfers should guide the seal into the bore or over the rod without shaving the lip. If the assembly suddenly requires excessive force, stop and inspect rather than forcing it through.
Always use the exact seal manufacturer and machine service instructions when they are available.
