Prepare the piston groove
Clean the groove and smooth any lead-in edges that could shave the seal.
Piston seals often have to expand over the piston and then recover into a closed groove. The biggest risks are uneven stretching, overstretching, twisting, and shaving the seal when the piston enters the cylinder bore.
Piston seals need controlled expansion and recovery before entering the cylinder bore.
Clean the groove and smooth any lead-in edges that could shave the seal.
Use a smooth expansion tool or controlled hand technique specified for the profile. Avoid pulling one side excessively.
Check the ring is centered in its groove and that energizers/back-up elements are in the correct order.
PTFE and some composite profiles need a sizing sleeve or recovery time after expansion.
Use the cylinder lead-in chamfer or a sleeve and keep the piston aligned with the bore.
Apply controlled force. Stop if a lip or ring begins to shave, roll or bunch.
Identify whether the seal is single-acting, double-acting, a U-cup, compact seal, energized PTFE ring or multi-piece assembly. Confirm pressure direction and component order.
Clean and deburr the groove. Cover adjacent guide-ring grooves, threads or sharp features that could catch the seal during expansion.
Use clean operating fluid or an approved compatible assembly lubricant. Excessive sticky grease can trap contamination and may not be compatible with every material.
For a closed groove, expand the seal slowly and uniformly over a smooth mandrel or assembly cone where appropriate. Avoid pulling one side much farther than the other.
Work the seal into the groove all the way around. Multi-piece seals must keep their energizer and sealing ring correctly aligned.
Some piston seals—especially PTFE-based rings—remain oversized after expansion. A smooth sizing sleeve or burnishing shell can restore the outside diameter before the piston enters the bore.
The cylinder bore needs a suitable lead-in chamfer. Insert the piston squarely. If the seal catches, do not hammer the piston through; inspect the lead-in, ring position and outside diameter.
