Clean the housing
Remove rust, dirt and previous seal debris from the wiper counterbore and rod surface.
A wiper is the cylinder’s first defense against dirt, water and debris. A wiper that is tilted, crushed or driven too deep can contaminate the rod sealing system even when the rod seal itself is new.
The wiper must sit squarely and present the scraping edge toward contamination.
Remove rust, dirt and previous seal debris from the wiper counterbore and rod surface.
The working scraping edge normally faces the external environment so it can remove dirt and water from the retracting rod.
Align the wiper evenly with the counterbore. Do not begin pressing it in at an angle.
For press-fit styles, use a flat driver that supports the metal or reinforced body—not the flexible scraping lip.
Verify the wiper is fully seated at the specified depth and the lip is not folded or crushed.
Do not use the same installation method for both. A metal-cased or interference-fit wiper normally needs controlled pressing rather than prying or hammering.
Remove rust, old adhesive, burrs and contamination. The housing edge must not cut the wiping lip during insertion.
The wiping lip normally faces outward toward contamination, while the geometry on the cylinder side is designed to cooperate with the lubricating film returning on the rod. Confirm the exact profile drawing.
Start one section into the groove and progressively work around the circumference with smooth tools if needed. Do not twist the wiper.
Use a flat assembly tool that supports the wiper evenly. Apply steady press force and stop at the specified flush or seated position. Impact installation with a hammer can distort the case or lip.
The wiper should be concentric, fully seated and free of dents. Pass the clean rod through carefully and make sure the lip contacts evenly.
