Scratched Hydraulic Cylinder Rod: Reseal, Repair or Replace?
A rod scratch is not just cosmetic when the rod passes through a pressure seal. The question is whether the damaged area crosses the seal travel and whether it can cut, abrade or bypass the sealing lip.
Why a rod defect matters
The rod is the dynamic running surface for the rod seal. Parker specifically links rod-seal leakage with dents, gouges and score marks. If a sharp defect travels through the lip every cycle, the seal may fail even when its size and material are correct.
Inspect more than the visible scratch
- Location: does the defect enter the sealing area during the normal stroke?
- Edge: is there a raised burr or sharp edge?
- Depth and pitting: corrosion pits can create leak paths even without a sharp burr.
- Chrome condition: flaking or widespread corrosion is different from a superficial mark.
- Straightness and side load: a recurring scratch may be evidence of alignment or bearing problems.
Be careful with quick “polish it” advice
There is no universal scratch depth that can be approved from a photo. Cylinder makers specify surface finish, dimensional tolerance and material/coating requirements. Aggressive polishing can change diameter or surface texture and create a new sealing problem.
For a valuable or safety-critical cylinder, have the rod measured. Depending on condition, a repair shop may recommend controlled finishing, re-chroming, replacement or a complete rod remake.
Check the cause of the damage
A repaired rod can be damaged again if the guide bearing is worn, the cylinder is side-loaded, contamination is entering through the wiper, or the installation is misaligned. Hallite specifically warns that inadequate bearings and side loading can damage rod or tube surfaces and then the seals.
