Repair or Replace a Hydraulic Cylinder? A Practical Decision Framework
A seal kit is cheap compared with a complete cylinder, but “just reseal it” stops being economical when the rod, bore, guides or structural parts are also damaged. The right decision starts with inspection, not a fixed repair-cost percentage.
When a reseal is often the simplest path
If the cylinder hardware is straight, the bore and rod running surfaces are serviceable, guides are within tolerance, and the failure is limited to age- or wear-related sealing elements, a proper reseal can be straightforward. The seal type, material and installation still need to match the application.
When repair becomes a larger rebuild
Rod scoring, corrosion, a bent rod, damaged threads, worn guide lands, barrel scoring, damaged piston or gland surfaces, or structural damage change the job. At that point, compare the full rebuild scope—not just the price of seals—with a replacement unit.
Availability can change the economics
An OEM replacement may be expensive but immediately available; a custom or obsolete cylinder may have the opposite situation. In downtime-sensitive equipment, lead time can matter as much as part cost. A repair shop may also be able to manufacture or restore individual components faster than a replacement can arrive.
Do not ignore the cause of failure
A replacement cylinder can fail early too if the original root cause was side loading, contamination, pressure spikes, incorrect mounting or poor guidance. Before choosing either path, identify why the first cylinder failed.

- Repair scope: seals only, rod work, bore work, guides, machining, welding or replacement components.
- Verification: dimensional inspection, pressure test and any application-specific test required.
- Downtime: realistic turnaround for repair versus delivery/installation of replacement.
- Risk: whether critical structural parts or surfaces can be restored confidently.
- Future serviceability: whether seal sizes, drawings and replacement parts will be available next time.
