Hydraulic Seal Extrusion: Why the Edge Looks Chewed or Nibbled

If the low-pressure edge of a hydraulic seal looks as if small pieces have been bitten away, do not treat it as ordinary wear. Extrusion is a clue that the seal was being forced into a clearance gap under pressure.

Pressure is only one part of extrusion

High pressure increases the force trying to push seal material into the gap, but pressure alone does not explain every failure. Parker lists excessive clearance, pressure excursions, material that is too soft, and fluid-related material degradation among common extrusion causes.

Measure the clearance, not only the old seal

If a guide ring is worn, a rod deflects, or the hardware clearance is larger than the seal was designed for, the effective extrusion gap increases. SKF notes that external rod loads can create pressure peaks and that anti-extrusion rings can be used in appropriate rod and buffer-seal arrangements.

Why fitting a harder seal is not always the full answer

A more extrusion-resistant material or a back-up ring may help, but only when the groove and operating conditions support that design. A harder material cannot correct a bent rod, excessive bearing clearance or pressure beyond the cylinder rating.

Inspect the failed part like evidence

  1. Note which side of the seal is damaged.
  2. Check whether damage is continuous around the circumference or concentrated in one area.
  3. Measure the rod/bore and relevant hardware clearances.
  4. Inspect guide rings and side-loading evidence.
  5. Review pressure spikes, temperature and fluid compatibility.
Repeated extrusion after resealing is a warning. Do not keep installing identical seals without checking the clearance, guidance, pressure peaks and whether the profile requires an anti-extrusion element.

What a good repair decision looks like

The replacement seal should be selected together with the groove, clearance, pressure, temperature, speed and fluid—not from ID × OD × height alone. If the hardware is outside tolerance, repair the hardware first or the new seal may fail the same way.
