Bent Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Symptoms: How to Separate a Bend from Misalignment
A rod can have a smooth-looking chrome surface and still need a straightness assessment. Conversely, a straight rod can be forced sideways by the machine. The useful repair question is whether the rod itself is permanently bent, the mounting imposes misalignment, or both conditions are present.

Clues worth recording before dismantling
Parker associates bent rods and poor alignment with rod/bearing damage and uneven wear. Record where the symptom happens, which direction the rod was moving, any impact or overload history and whether the fault began after a mounting repair. Do not force another cycle to reproduce binding.
- Photograph visible rod damage only from a safe position with the machine secured.
- Mark the orientation of removed guides and seals so the shop can compare their wear patterns.
- Keep the machine history separate from the measurement result: an impact suggests a cause but is not a straightness measurement.
Bend, side load or worn guidance?
A bent rod is a geometric defect in the rod itself. Side loading describes the force applied across it. Worn guides describe a loss of mechanical guidance. These can occur together, so replacing the most visibly damaged component is not a complete diagnosis.
Ask the repairer to assess the unloaded rod and the machine mounting separately. If the rod meets its specification, the pins, pivots, load guidance and mounting still need review. If it does not, correcting the mounting alone will not restore the rod’s geometry.
What a useful workshop measurement contains
- Identify the rod and applicable drawing or service specification.
- Specify the measurement setup, supports and reference surfaces used by the approved procedure.
- Record measurement locations along the rod and the observed readings, rather than write only “looks straight.”
- Compare the result with the applicable limit, including the prescribed interpretation of runout and straightness.
- Inspect the associated gland, piston guidance and sealing surfaces before approving a reseal.
Do not copy a tolerance from an unrelated cylinder catalog. A single dial-indicator reading without its setup cannot establish acceptance, and a scratch inspection cannot substitute for geometry checks.
Why a new seal is not the repair decision
Before ordering another kit, ask for a documented disposition of the rod and its mating hardware. A temporary reduction in leakage after resealing does not demonstrate that the rod is acceptable. Keep the returned seals for comparison with the previous failure; recurrence at the same location is useful evidence for the repairer.
Avoid improvised straightening
Do not use system pressure, a hammer or local heating to straighten an installed rod. Whether restoration is permissible depends on the rod construction, condition and manufacturer requirements. Ask a qualified cylinder specialist to determine repair versus replacement and document the final geometry and surface condition. Do not assume polishing the chrome corrects a bend.
Safe next steps
Secure the supported load and isolate stored energy under the machine procedure before access or removal. An apparently stopped cylinder can still move when attachments are released. Removal, handling and any return-to-service test must follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Request a repair record covering the rod measurement, guide and gland findings, mounting correction and acceptance checks. This separates a completed mechanical repair from a seal change that merely hides the symptom.
Technical references
Manufacturer references support the principles identified above. The inspection sequence is HydraResolve’s synthesis, not an OEM service procedure. Use current data for the exact cylinder and seal.
Turn the finding into a repair decision
Use the tools to organize the symptom, dimensions and operating conditions before ordering a seal or committing to a rebuild.
