Hydraulic Wiper Seal Won’t Fit? Check Snap-In vs Press-In Housing Before Using Force
A wiper can have the correct rod diameter and still be wrong for the gland. The outside housing style—snap-in, press-in, metal-cased or molded—must match the cylinder head.
Rod size alone does not identify the wiper
Two wipers for the same rod diameter can use different outside diameters, groove depths and retention methods. Compare the housing dimensions and profile, not only the wiping lip.
Snap-in and press-in wipers are different systems
SKF notes that snap-in wipers in stepped grooves are often hand-installable, while press-in wipers require suitable equipment and steady pressing force. Hallite also offers metal-cased wipers specifically designed to press-fit into open housings.
Do not use impact to solve a fit problem
SKF advises against impact installation for press-in wipers and recommends a tool that stops when the wiper is flush with the groove edge. Hammering a wrong or tilted wiper can damage both the seal and housing.
If the supplied wiper is loose
A loose metal-cased wiper may be the wrong outside diameter or housing style. Adhesive is not a substitute for verifying the specified interference fit unless the manufacturer explicitly calls for it.
If the supplied wiper is too tight
Re-measure the housing for corrosion, burrs, paint or previous damage, then compare with the product housing table. Do not grind the metal case or enlarge the gland casually; that changes the designed retention.
