Inspect and lubricate
Remove burrs and old debris, then use clean compatible hydraulic fluid or approved assembly lubricant.
Rod seals are easy to damage because they are often fitted into a closed gland groove and then must survive the rod passing through them. The goal is to deform the seal only as much as needed, without cutting, twisting or permanently stretching it.
A closed rod gland is where installation damage happens most easily.
Remove burrs and old debris, then use clean compatible hydraulic fluid or approved assembly lubricant.
For a conventional pressure-energized U-cup, the open lip normally faces the pressure chamber.
For suitable flexible profiles, form a smooth kidney shape just enough to enter the closed groove. Do not crease the lip.
Work the seal around the groove until it sits evenly, untwisted and fully expanded.
Use a smooth sleeve over threads or sharp shoulders before the rod passes through the seal.
Guide the rod through the lip gradually. Stop rather than forcing a rolled or oversized seal.
Check the groove, lead-in chamfer, rod surface and any threads or ports the seal must cross. A burr can slice a new lip before the cylinder ever sees pressure.
Remove old seal fragments and contamination. Lightly lubricate the seal and assembly surfaces with clean operating fluid or an approved compatible lubricant.
For multi-piece rod sealing systems, install the O-ring energizer or other specified component in the correct groove before the sealing ring. Do not invent the stack order—use the profile drawing.
For many polyurethane or energized rod seals in closed grooves, a controlled kidney-shaped fold allows the seal to enter the gland. Avoid a sharp crease. Smooth installation tools help control the fold and reduce the chance of nicking the lip.
Once inside, gently work the seal around the groove until it is fully seated and untwisted. Check that the lip is not rolled under itself.
If the rod end has threads or sharp shoulders, use a smooth protective sleeve. The rod’s lead-in chamfer should enter squarely and gradually through the seal.
If the rod will not pass with reasonable assembly force, stop. Recheck seal size, direction, groove seating and lip position. Forcing the rod can shave or invert the sealing lip.
