Hydraulic Seal Swollen, Soft or Sticky? Check Fluid Compatibility Before Replacing It
When a used seal comes out larger, softer, tacky or visibly swollen, the material itself may have changed. Installing the same compound again without checking the fluid can repeat the failure.
What causes swelling?
Elastomers and thermoplastics can absorb components of a hydraulic fluid. If the exact compound is poorly matched to the fluid, volume and hardness can change. The result may be swollen lips, a seal that feels unusually soft, or a part that no longer fits its groove correctly.
Common clues
- The replacement seal is visibly larger than an unused seal of the same size.
- Edges are rounded or distorted without the usual abrasion pattern.
- The material feels softer, gummy or tacky.
- Several seals exposed to the same fluid show similar changes.
- The problem appeared after a fluid change, additive change, contamination event or higher operating temperature.
Do not diagnose by color alone
Seal color is not a reliable material identifier. Different manufacturers color the same polymer differently, and additives can stain a seal during service. Use the compound designation or supplier data whenever possible.
What to verify before resealing
- Identify the actual hydraulic fluid, including fire-resistant, biodegradable or water-based type.
- Find the exact seal compound—not only “NBR,” “PU” or “Viton.”
- Compare the manufacturer compatibility rating at the real operating temperature.
- Check whether contamination or mixed fluids may be present.
- Inspect the gland because a swollen seal may also have been extruded or mechanically damaged.
