PTFE vs Polyurethane Hydraulic Seals: When Each Material Makes Sense

PTFE is not automatically an upgrade over polyurethane, and polyurethane is not automatically tougher for every cylinder. Material choice must match the seal profile and operating system.

Where PTFE-based seals are attractive

PTFE-based sealing elements are widely used where low friction, smooth motion and wide media/temperature capability are important. Many designs are energized by an O-ring or other elastic element because PTFE itself has limited elastic recovery.

Where polyurethane is attractive

Polyurethane hydraulic seals are common where robust lip sealing, wear resistance and extrusion resistance are needed. Their elasticity can make many profiles easier to energize and install than rigid slipper-ring designs.

Why you cannot swap materials in the same groove blindly

A PTFE slipper seal and a polyurethane U-cup may require different groove geometry, energizers, interference and surface finish. Even when nominal rod/bore sizes match, the profile may not be a drop-in substitute.

Installation differences matter

Trelleborg publishes separate installation procedures for PTFE and polyurethane piston seals. PTFE rings may require controlled expansion and resizing/calibration, while polyurethane must also be protected from sharp edges and excessive stretching.

Choose from the failure mode and duty cycle

If friction/stick-slip is the dominant problem, a suitable PTFE-based design may help. If contamination, extrusion, shock loading or robust lip sealing is dominant, a polyurethane design may be attractive. Verify the manufacturer rating for pressure, speed, fluid and temperature.
