PU vs NBR Hydraulic Seals: Which One Fits the Job?
PU and NBR are both common in hydraulic sealing, but they are not interchangeable “better versus worse” materials. The right choice depends on what the seal has to survive.
Where PU is usually attractive
Polyurethane is widely used for dynamic rod and piston seals because many PU compounds offer strong wear and extrusion resistance. That makes PU attractive where the seal sees reciprocating motion, pressure and abrasive service.
But “PU” is a family, not one compound. Hydrolysis resistance, low-temperature behavior and fluid compatibility vary by chemistry and grade, so the exact manufacturer data still matters.
Where NBR is usually attractive
Nitrile rubber (NBR) is one of the most common elastomers in fluid power. SKF notes that NBR is widely used with hydraulic fluids, while higher temperature or more aggressive fluid service may push the selection toward HNBR, FKM or another material.
NBR is flexible, economical and useful in many static and dynamic oil-sealing applications. It is also common for O-rings and energizing elements. Its limits show up when temperature, chemical compatibility, extrusion resistance or wear demand exceed the chosen compound.
Do not choose by hardness alone
A harder material is not automatically more durable in every cylinder. Seal profile, extrusion gap, pressure, speed, surface finish, lubrication and contamination all change the result. PTFE may be a better direction when low friction or broad chemical resistance dominates; FKM may be more appropriate for higher temperature or aggressive fluids.

Before manufacturing a custom seal
If a custom-machined seal will replace an OEM part, record the original material if known and verify the service conditions. Changing material can change friction, interference, installation behavior and how the lip responds to pressure.
