Hydraulic Seal Hard, Brittle or Cracked? Heat Damage and Aging Clues
A seal that has lost elasticity behaves differently from a normally worn seal. Hardening, cracking or pieces breaking from the lip should trigger a temperature and material review before the next rebuild.
Why hydraulic seals harden
Temperature accelerates aging reactions in many sealing materials. Heat can come from high bulk-oil temperature, local friction at the sealing interface, excessive lip load, poor lubrication, high speed or an external heat source.
Separate heat damage from abrasion
Abrasive wear removes material and often leaves scratches or a worn contact band. Thermal degradation changes the material properties themselves. A seal can show both at once—for example, a hot, hardened lip may then chip or wear rapidly.
Checks before replacing the seal
- Measure actual oil temperature during the duty cycle.
- Check whether the cylinder is cycling faster or more continuously than intended.
- Inspect rod/bore finish and alignment for friction-generating conditions.
- Confirm the compound temperature range in the actual fluid.
- Review whether the seal profile is being over-compressed in the groove.
