Wet Hydraulic Cylinder Rod: Normal Oil Film or a Rod-Seal Leak?
A perfectly “bone dry” dynamic rod is not always the design target. Rod seals meter a very thin lubricating film—but visible drops, streaks or accumulating oil need investigation.
Why there is oil on a healthy rod seal system
SKF explains that rod seals provide a thin lubrication film on the piston rod to lubricate the rod seal and wiper and help inhibit corrosion. Parker likewise describes a film only a few microns thick in a rod sealing system.
What normal film looks like
A faint uniform sheen that does not build into drops and is largely recovered on the return stroke can be consistent with normal sealing behavior. The exact acceptable leakage depends on cylinder design and manufacturer criteria.
What suggests a real leak
Oil streaks that grow each cycle, drops collecting at the wiper/gland, contamination sticking to wet oil, or measurable fluid loss point toward a sealing-system problem rather than a lubrication film.
Why the wiper matters
Parker demonstrated that a wiper that removes too much oil can prevent the film from being returned into the cylinder, causing oil to accumulate outside even when the rod seal itself is functioning.
If you are unsure
Clean the rod and gland, cycle the cylinder under controlled conditions, observe where oil first appears, and compare the amount over repeated strokes. Inspect rod damage, seal condition and wiper compatibility before replacing parts.
