Hydraulic Cylinder Leaking From the Rod: What to Check First
If oil is appearing where the rod exits the gland, the rod seal is an obvious suspect—but replacing that seal without checking the rod and guides is how the same leak comes back a week later.
Start by proving where the oil is coming from
Wipe the rod, gland and nearby fittings clean, then cycle the cylinder only under the machine maker’s safe test conditions. A hose, port fitting or gland-to-tube joint can wet the same area and make a rod seal look guilty when it is not.
Once the leak is clearly at the rod/gland interface, treat the seal as part of a system. The seal has to run on a usable rod surface, stay centered by the bearing or wear elements, and survive the actual pressure, temperature and fluid.
Four checks before you order another seal
- Inspect the entire working length of the rod. Look for scoring, pitting, corrosion and dents. A sharp defect can cut a new lip during the first few strokes.
- Check side play. Noticeable lateral movement at the rod can point to worn guide/bearing elements or misalignment. Side loading makes the rod push against the sealing system instead of passing through it concentrically.
- Look at the failed seal, not just its size. A cleanly cut lip suggests a different problem from a hardened, glazed, swollen or extruded seal.
- Verify the gland. Confirm groove width, sealing diameter, lead-in chamfers and any edges or ports the seal crossed during installation.
When the rod surface is the real problem
Parker’s cylinder troubleshooting guidance specifically tells technicians to inspect for dents, gouges and score marks when rod-seal leakage occurs. That matters because a perfect seal cannot compensate for a rough dynamic running surface.
Do not decide from appearance alone whether a rod is repairable. Chrome condition, straightness, diameter, surface finish and the depth/location of damage all matter. A cylinder shop can measure those properly before you spend money resealing it again.
When guide wear or misalignment is more likely
If the rod has visible side movement, uneven polishing, or the seal shows one-sided wear, look beyond the seal. Hallite notes that inadequate bearings and side loading can damage the rod or tube surface and then damage the seal. Correcting the seal without correcting the side load only resets the clock.
What to do next
If the rod and guides look serviceable, measure the removed seal and the gland, identify the profile, then check material compatibility with the fluid and temperature. If the rod is damaged or side play is obvious, solve that mechanical issue before treating a fresh seal as the repair.
