Cylinder Bypass or Control Valve Leak? How to Separate the Two Causes of Drift

Cylinder drift proves that fluid is moving somewhere in the circuit; it does not prove where. The leak path can be across the piston seal, through a control valve, through a load-holding valve, or elsewhere in the circuit.

Why drift gets misdiagnosed

If a raised cylinder slowly moves with the control centered, many people immediately order a seal kit. But the cylinder and valve are connected parts of the same hydraulic circuit. Leakage through either path can allow movement.

Clues that point toward the valve/circuit

High-pressure hydraulic isolation tests are hazardous. Do not crack fittings, plug working ports or deadhead a cylinder based on a generic internet procedure. Stored energy, load movement and pressure intensification can cause severe injury. Follow the OEM service method and use rated test equipment.

What you can do before pressure testing

  1. Document exactly when and in which direction the cylinder drifts.
  2. Compare behavior cold vs hot.
  3. Check for external leakage and mechanical load/alignment issues.
  4. Review whether a counterbalance, pilot-operated check or load-holding valve is part of the circuit.
  5. Use the service manual to choose the correct isolation or leakage test.
