Hydraulic Cylinder Weak or Won’t Lift: Pressure, Bypass or Load?

A weak cylinder is not automatically a seal problem. Before opening the cylinder, prove that the required pressure is reaching it while the load is actually being applied.

Force starts with pressure

Hydraulic cylinder force is tied to effective pressure and piston area. Parker’s troubleshooting guidance puts low hydraulic pressure at the top of the list when a cylinder fails to move its load. That is why a no-load pressure reading can be misleading: the useful measurement is what the system does when the cylinder is trying to work.

Check these in order

  1. Confirm the load and geometry. Has the load increased, linkage changed, or mechanical binding appeared?
  2. Measure pressure at the right point under load. Compare it with the machine/circuit specification—not with a generic internet value.
  3. Check relief and control valves. A relief valve opening early or a valve leaking internally can prevent full pressure from reaching the cylinder.
  4. Consider pump/flow condition. A worn pump can sometimes look acceptable at light demand but struggle under load.
  5. Test for cylinder bypass. If required pressure is present yet force is still missing, internal piston-seal leakage becomes more plausible.

Clues that point toward internal bypass

A cylinder that moves normally with little load but loses holding force or stalls as load rises can have internal leakage. Heat generation and drift may appear at the same time. The proper isolation test depends on the circuit and must be carried out safely.

Clues that point away from the cylinder

If the measured pressure at the cylinder port never reaches the expected value, opening the cylinder is premature. The issue may be relief setting, directional-valve leakage, pump condition, a restriction, or another circuit path.

Do not chase “more pressure” blindly. Never increase relief settings beyond the machine and component ratings to make a weak cylinder lift. That can convert a diagnostic problem into a component failure.

Bottom line

Prove pressure first. Then distinguish an upstream pressure problem from internal bypass and mechanical overload. The seal kit belongs late in that sequence, not at the beginning.
