Internal Piston Seal Bypass: Signs, Tests and What It Can Be Confused With

Internal bypass means fluid is crossing where it should remain separated—often across the piston sealing system. It can reduce force and load holding without leaving a puddle on the floor.

What internal bypass looks like

Typical symptoms include loss of holding force, drift, heat, reduced efficiency or a cylinder that seems weaker under load than its pressure reading suggests. Because the oil stays inside the hydraulic circuit, there may be no visible external leak.

Why drift alone is not proof

Parker explicitly notes that a cylinder that drifts does not necessarily have a leaking piston seal. Oil can migrate through valves or other parts of the circuit. The diagnostic job is therefore to isolate the cylinder from those alternate paths.

What damages piston sealing systems

Trelleborg describes the piston seal and wear rings as a system: the seal separates pressure between the two sides of the piston, while wear rings guide the piston and prevent damaging metal-to-metal contact.

Testing without creating another fault

The exact bypass test depends on cylinder and circuit design. A qualified technician may isolate and pressurize one chamber while monitoring the opposite side according to the service procedure. The important point is that the test should intentionally isolate other leakage paths.

Never loosen or disconnect a hydraulic line that may be pressurized. Depressurize, lock out energy and mechanically support loads before any circuit opening.

After bypass is confirmed

Do not stop at “replace piston seal.” Inspect the bore, piston, wear rings, groove and failed seal. A new seal running in a scored bore can reproduce the same internal leak.
