Rebuilt Hydraulic Cylinder Still Bypasses Internally? What to Check Before Rebuilding It Again
A new piston seal does not guarantee a pressure-tight piston. If the cylinder still drifts or cannot hold force after a rebuild, separate true piston bypass from valve or circuit leakage first.
1. Reconfirm the diagnosis
Cylinder drift can come from piston bypass, a leaking control valve, load-holding valve leakage or external plumbing. Use the machine service procedure and safe isolation/testing methods before condemning the rebuilt cylinder.
2. Check whether the replacement piston seal actually matches the groove
A seal kit can contain a wrong profile or a close-looking size. The piston seal must match the housing dimensions and application. A seal that rolls, twists, sits loose or is pinched can bypass immediately.
3. Look for installation damage
Closed-groove piston seals are stretched during installation. SKF notes limits for material deformation and recommends controlled installation methods. Shaved edges, twisting, overstretching or an unsized PTFE ring can create a leakage path from the first cycle.
4. Inspect the bore and guiding system
A scratched, pitted or out-of-round bore can damage a new seal. Worn or missing guide/wear rings allow transverse load and metal contact, which can misalign the piston and shorten seal life.
5. Check pressure and heat if the seal fails again
If a replacement looks extruded or chewed after a short run, investigate pressure spikes, clearance, side loading and material suitability instead of installing a third identical seal.
