Hydraulic Cylinder Drifting Under Load: Cylinder or Valve?
A drifting cylinder does not automatically mean the piston seal is bad. Internal leakage through the cylinder is one possibility; leakage through the control or load-holding valve is another.
What “drift” actually tells you
Drift is movement that happens when the cylinder is supposed to hold position. The important clue is not only that it moves, but when, in which direction, and how the rate changes with load and temperature.
Internal piston-seal bypass can let oil move from one side of the piston to the other. But Parker’s troubleshooting guidance also warns that apparent piston-seal leakage may actually come from other components in the circuit. That is why replacing a piston seal based on drift alone is a weak diagnosis.
A sensible diagnostic order
- Check for external leakage. Rule out obvious fluid loss at hoses, ports, gland and tube joints.
- Record the drift. Note whether it happens with the machine hot or cold, loaded or unloaded, and whether the direction is consistent.
- Check the load-holding circuit. Counterbalance, pilot-operated check and directional valves can leak internally even when there is no external oil.
- Isolate the cylinder safely. A qualified technician can use the manufacturer’s test procedure to separate cylinder bypass from valve leakage. Never loosen a pressurized line just to “see what comes out.”
What points toward piston-seal bypass?
Drift that persists after the valve side is properly isolated, combined with otherwise normal external sealing, makes internal cylinder bypass more plausible. Bore scoring, contaminated oil, excessive back pressure and normal piston-seal wear can all contribute to internal leakage.
If the cylinder was recently rebuilt and drift appeared immediately, verify the piston seal orientation, profile, energizer/back-up elements and bore condition before assuming the new seal is simply defective.
What points toward a valve problem?
If the cylinder holds when isolated but drifts when connected to the normal circuit, the next inspection belongs upstream. The exact component depends on the circuit: a directional spool, load-holding valve, counterbalance valve or other path can allow oil to migrate.
Bottom line
Use drift as a symptom, not a verdict. Prove whether the oil is crossing the piston or escaping through the control circuit before you buy a seal kit.
