Can You Use Generic O-Rings in Hydraulics? Size Is Only Part of the Answer

“NBR and the right metric size” is not a complete hydraulic O-ring specification. Dynamic and high-pressure service depends on the gland and compound as a system.

When a generic O-ring can be reasonable

A standard O-ring from a reputable supplier can be correct when its size, compound, hardness, quality standard and application limits match the original design. “Generic” is not automatically bad; unspecified is the problem.

Why a bulk assortment can fail

Assortment labels may state only material family and nominal size. Hydraulic service can expose the ring to dynamic motion, pressure pulses, extrusion gaps and elevated temperature. Parker lists excessive clearance, too-soft material, incompatible fluid, sharp glands and incorrect size among extrusion/nibbling causes.

Hardness matters—but harder is not always better

Higher hardness generally improves extrusion resistance, but can increase friction and reduce conformity. The right hardness depends on pressure, motion, clearance and gland design; do not substitute 90 Shore A simply because 70 Shore A failed.

OEM does not mean magic

An OEM ring may simply be a standard seal selected to a known specification. The advantage is that the machine maker has already specified the compound and size. If you replace it independently, you must reproduce those requirements rather than only its visible dimensions.

What to verify before substitution

Confirm actual gland dimensions, O-ring size, squeeze/stretch, pressure including spikes, temperature, hydraulic fluid, motion type and whether back-up rings are required. If any of those are unknown in a critical circuit, use the OEM specification or an application engineer.
