When Does a Hydraulic O-Ring Need a Back-Up Ring? Extrusion Clues Explained
A back-up ring is not the primary seal. Its job is to support the softer O-ring at the clearance gap so pressure cannot force the elastomer into an unsupported space.
What a back-up ring actually does
Under pressure, an O-ring is pushed toward the low-pressure side of its groove. If the diametral clearance is too large for the pressure, temperature and compound hardness, the elastomer can be forced into the gap. A stiffer back-up ring fills or bridges that vulnerable space.
Do not use a pressure number by itself
Manufacturer recommendations differ because extrusion resistance depends on the complete gland: pressure, extrusion gap, O-ring hardness, temperature, motion and back-up-ring material. Trelleborg and Parker both specify back-up rings as anti-extrusion elements, but final limits must come from the exact product data.
Single or double back-up?
For one-direction pressure, support is normally needed on the low-pressure side. If pressure can alternate direction, the gland may need support on both sides or a different seal arrangement. Follow the specific design rather than adding rings wherever there is room.
If an O-ring keeps extruding
- Measure the actual groove and hardware clearance.
- Confirm the O-ring cross-section and squeeze.
- Check pressure spikes, not only normal system pressure.
- Review temperature and compound hardness.
- Inspect for side load or worn guides that increase the effective gap.
