70 vs 90 Durometer O-Rings in Hydraulics: When Harder Helps—and When It Does Not

If a 70 Shore A O-ring extrudes, changing to 90 Shore A can sometimes help—but it can also hide a clearance, pressure or gland problem that should be corrected.

What durometer means in practice

Shore A hardness is a convenient indicator of elastomer stiffness. It does not directly tell you chemical compatibility, wear resistance or quality, and two compounds with the same hardness can behave differently.

Why 90 durometer can help at pressure

Parker lists O-ring material that is too soft as one contributor to extrusion/nibbling and recommends harder material as one possible correction. A harder compound deforms less into a clearance gap under the same conditions.

Why harder is not automatically better

Parker’s European handbook notes a common 70–80 Shore A range for dynamic hydraulic O-rings as a friction/wear compromise, while harder rings can have higher friction. Installation also becomes less forgiving.

Fix the gland problem too

If the real issue is excessive clearance, pressure spikes, eccentricity, sharp edges, overfilled groove or incompatible fluid, 90 durometer may only delay failure. Back-up rings, correct tolerances or a different seal profile can be more appropriate.

How to choose

Use the specific seal manufacturer’s pressure-gap-temperature chart and application data. Do not substitute hardness independently in safety-critical or OEM-controlled assemblies unless the gland and compound requirements are known.
