Hydraulic Cylinder Jerking or Chattering: What to Check Before Blaming the Seal
A cylinder that moves in short jumps can feel like a bad seal, but the seal is only one part of the system. Air in the oil, unstable flow, mechanical side load and excessive friction can all create similar symptoms.
1. Rule out trapped or entrained air
Air can make hydraulic motion compressible instead of solid and predictable. Look for foamy oil, a recent hose or cylinder change, a low reservoir level, or a system that was opened and not bled according to the machine maker’s procedure. Parker’s contamination guidance also notes that air coming out of solution can damage seals under rapid decompression, turbulent flow or overrunning loads.
2. Compare commanded flow with actual motion
If the cylinder hesitates because flow is being interrupted, a new seal will not cure it. Check the valve, flow control, hoses and filters using the machine’s service procedure. A restriction or unstable control signal can create a stop-start movement that looks mechanical.
3. Look for side load and guide wear
A rod that is not travelling concentrically can rub the guide and seal package. That raises friction and can produce stick-slip, especially at low speed. Check rod alignment, mounting pins, guide wear and any evidence that one side of the rod or seal is polishing harder than the other.
4. Treat friction as a system problem
Rod and buffer seals need enough lubrication to control friction without allowing unacceptable leakage. SKF’s work on rod sealing systems shows that poor pressure relief or insufficient lubrication can raise friction and temperature. Wrong profile, wrong material, excessive squeeze or a damaged running surface can all make the seal package drag.
What to inspect before ordering parts
- Oil condition and any signs of aeration.
- Flow/valve behavior in both directions.
- Rod straightness, alignment and side play.
- Seal and guide wear pattern.
- Whether the symptom changes with load, temperature or speed.
When a seal is more likely to be involved
Seal involvement becomes more likely when jerking is paired with abnormal friction, heat, repeated seal wear, one-sided damage or a known mismatch between the seal material/profile and the operating conditions. Even then, verify the hardware and guidance before fitting another seal.
