How to Remove Old Hydraulic Seals Without Scratching the Rod or Gland
The goal is not to save the old seal. The goal is to remove it without creating a scratch or burr that destroys the new one.
Do not pry against the rod
A deep pick mark on a chrome rod or gland sealing land can become a permanent leak path. If the seal is trapped, change the access method rather than increasing force against a precision surface.
Remove components in the correct order
Many rod glands must be removed from the rod before the internal seal can be accessed properly. Some retainers, snap rings and wire rings have specific release procedures. Use the cylinder or machine service information when available.
Choose the removal tool for the groove
For accessible elastomer seals, a smooth hook or plastic/brass tool can lift the seal while keeping the point away from the groove floor. Hard PTFE or compact seals may need controlled cutting or deformation—but only where the blade cannot touch a sealing surface.
Clean before installing the replacement
Trelleborg and Hallite emphasize clean components, protected threads, rounded/deburred edges, compatible lubricant and avoiding sharp-edged tools during seal work. Removal damage and installation damage are often two halves of the same repeat failure.
If the seal will not move
Stop and identify whether it is actually a seal, a metal-cased wiper, retaining ring, wear component or press-fit part. Forcing an unknown part is how rods, glands and grooves get damaged.
