Single-Acting vs Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinder Seals: What Changes?
“It fits the groove” is not enough. A seal profile must also match which surfaces move and whether pressure acts from one side or can reverse.
Single-acting does not mean “one seal”
Single-acting describes how the cylinder is powered, not the number of seals. A gravity-return lift cylinder can still have piston sealing, rod/gland sealing, wipers, guides and static seals depending on its design.
Double-acting changes the pressure map
In a double-acting cylinder, either chamber may be pressurized. The piston sealing arrangement must control cross-port leakage in both operating directions, which can require a double-acting profile or opposed single-acting elements.
Why U-cup direction matters
A single-acting lip seal is pressure energized. Installing it backward can leave the lip facing away from the pressure it is intended to contain. Do not infer orientation only from how the old damaged seal looks.
Piston-seal labels matter
Trelleborg product data explicitly distinguish single-acting and double-acting sealing capability. A compact double-acting piston seal is not interchangeable with every U-cup just because dimensions appear close.
Before ordering a replacement
Identify cylinder type, which chamber sees pressure, whether load holding is required, rod and bore dimensions, groove geometry, pressure, speed, fluid and temperature. Then select a profile designed for that duty.
